Who Are You, Cat-Bird?
A Timely Kids’ Nature Book with a Mythological Twist
What do you get when you cross a house cat with a parrot? Young readers find out in Who Are You, Cat-Bird? when Griffie, a whimsical half-house-cat, half-parrot creature turns an ordinary day in the park into an unforgettable adventure. This first book in the new Griffie’s Nature Adventures series offers children ages 4 to 8 an imaginative twist on griffin mythology and a timely message about protecting wildlife from the dangers of plastic waste.
Two kids—bright, curious, and ethnically diverse—stumble upon Griffie and soon discover he’s far more than an unusual-looking critter. Through his captivating tales of a griffin ancestor famous for guarding the royal treasure, Griffie reveals his own dream of becoming more like the griffins of old by guarding the greatest treasure on Earth: Mother Nature herself.
But he can’t do it alone.
As the story unfolds, Griffie inspires the kids to join his quest. Their adventure takes an emotional turn when they rescue a bluebird trapped in a plastic bag—an encounter that shines light on how “harmless” human waste creates a real danger for wildlife. Together, the trio leaps into action… and soon witnesses signs that Griffie’s dream may be coming true. The story ends with an empowering call to action, inviting young readers to help Griffie earn his eagle feathers by keeping animals safe from discarded plastic.
This vibrant kids’ nature book is perfect for both home and classroom settings, with a fun “Questions and Activities” section at the end inviting young children to mimic Griffie’s parrot-like squawk as it nudges older kids to consider their deep connection with the natural world and take steps to protect animals from plastic waste. Some first-graders and most second-graders are able to read the book on their own; younger children love looking at the illustrations as the story is read to them.
Author Chiwah Slater calls on her experience as an environmental advocate and former children’s party entertainer to make the learning both useful and fun, and artist Darrin Drda’s original illustrations bring every page to life.
Who Are You, Cat-Bird? is available as eBook, paperback, and hardcover at major online and brick-and-mortar bookstores. A publisher’s discount coupon for softcover and hardcover books can be found at www.greensongpress.com/20%OFF.
